Back to School: DIY Pillows
8:42:00 PMWho doesn't love to decorate their bed with tons of accent pillows? These pillows average about $15-$20 for each pillow. Well I have created 5 pillows at a very very affordable price. This total DIY cost me about $21. Talk about a total steal! SO, let's get into it.
To create your own accent pillows, you will first need to decide how many you would like to make. This will determine how much fabric you will need to buy. At Walmart, I found a pack of 5 sheets of fabric. I bought 2 packs which was enough fabric to make 5 pillows. If you decide to go to an actual craft store, I recommend getting about a yard of each fabric. The other materials you will need are pillow stuffing, thread (same color as fabric), a sewing needle, and a sewing machine (optional).
First, you want to iron the fabric. If you see in the picture, my fabric had a bunch of creases. You want to make sure your fabric is completely flat, which will make it easier to work with in the future steps.
Second, you want to cut out a square or rectangle shape from the fabric. I do not know the exact measurements because I used some other accent pillow cases as an outline. I recommend you using other accent pillows as an outline. However if you don't have other pillows accessible, you can always google the typical dimensions of an accent pillow then measure it out on the fabric. Since I used old pillow cases as an outline, I pinned them to my fabric then cut around the outline. (Pictured above)
Once you have cut out one side of your pillow, pin it to the same type of fabric. Make sure to pin the two pieces of fabric with the right side facing each other. The wrong side of the fabric should be facing up at all times. (Hard to explain - refer to the picture above) Now, you are going to cut around the outline once again. After doing this, you should have two pieces of the same size fabric pinned together.
Now you will take those two pieces of fabric and sew them together. At this point you have a choice, you can hand sew them together or use a sewing machine. Personally, I used my sewing machine because it was quicker and neater. However, you can get the same results by sewing by hand. When sewing you want to make sure to leave about a 5 to 6 inch hole so you will be able to turn the fabric to the right side.
Once you have turned the fabric onto the right side, you will now stuff the pillow. You can put in as much stuffing as you would like, it all depends on how fluffy you want your pillow to be. After you have put in the amount of desired stuffing, it is time to close up the pillow.
To close up the pillow, you must sew it by hand. It may be possible to finish up the pillow with the sewing machine, however I do not know exactly how that is done. When closing up, make sure to use thread that is the SAME color as the fabric. You want to make your stitches are as discreet as possible. You can do whatever stitch you prefer, I did a classic running stitch. I went over the stitches twice to secure the closing.
After you have finished the stitches, your pillow is now finished! I repeated these steps for my other 4 pillows. Now I have 5 different pillows for my bed in my dorm! I hope this tutorial was helpful. If you all have any questions about any of the steps, feel free to message me! Hope you all enjoyed!
Yours truly,
